Why Yoga ?
In its simplest form Yoga is a workout program. It consists of asanas (postures), bandhas (neuro muscular locks), mudras (gestures), breathing techniques, kriyas (purification techniques) and meditation. Yoga can transform all levels of human existence – physical, mental, emotional, physiological and spiritual towards betterment.
It is easy to learn and needs hardly any equipment. Yoga tones and strengthens cardiovascular systems and body. Meditation improves your mental fitness and concentration by bestowing tranquility and peace to your mind.
It is suitable for everybody — young, middle aged or old and either sex. Yoga therapy is beneficial even for the sick. It can even improve your sex life.

What is Yoga ?
Yoga is not a religion. It is a way of life which has health and peace of mind as its aim.
The term yoga comes from a Sanskrit word which means ‘yoke’ or ‘union’. By yoga one yokes the ‘individual self’ with the ‘Divine’, ‘Universal Spirit’, or ‘Cosmic Consciousness’.
Yoga has its roots in India’s more than 5000 year old scriptures. A sage ‘Patanjali’ codified the knowledge in his ‘Yoga Sutra of Patanjali’, a four Sutras (books) compilation containing 196 aphorisms on accomplishing moksh or eternal enlightment through yoga.
Ashtanga Yoga incorporated in the second Sutra is the heart of Patanjali's teaching. Its first four parts deal with mental and physical exercises tailored to bring the mind in tune with the body. The other four deal with meditation.

Types of Yoga
There are six major types of yogas, all with the same goals of health and harmony but with varying techniques: hatha, raja, karma, bhakti, jnana, and tantra yoga.
The most practiced system the hatha yoga consists of nearly 200 physical postures, movements and breathing techniques designed to tune the body and mind to its optimal fitness.
Hatha yoga based on goal and teaching methods has been modified into different schools. Some common ones are Iyengar, Bikram, Kripalu, and Ashtanga yoga.
At Rajasthan Yoga Retreat (Ashram) we propagate the centuries old yoga and meditation practices from the Jasnath Yoga Panth (Community).
Learning Yoga
Yoga is simple enough and one can learn the basics from good books, CD, DVD on the subject, which are plentiful. However attaining the correct postures with proper breathing control is critical to derive full benefits from Yoga. Yoga therefore is usually best learnt at the feet of a yoga guru/ teacher.
A Yoga Guru motivates you by describing the benefits of each posture. He supervises your proper entry, exit and taking up of postures and breath control. Yoga classes are generally inexpensive, and students can learn basic postures in just a few classes.
Yoga work outs last anywhere from 20 minutes to two or more hours. Yoga workouts can be tailored to meet ones life style, goals and needs; one hour is a good time investment to perform a sequence of postures and meditation for most people.
